Artful Writing: Intro to Ekphrasis
Workshop Description:
Tap into shapes and lines, light and shadow, color and pigmentation, tone and mood, and objects and people through a series of prompts that present well-known and lesser-known works of art. Gain inspiration from Caravaggio, Velazquez, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Sargent, Homer, Kahlo, and Dali, among others. We'll meet for two hours and write together using the AWA method over the course of four weeks. The AWA method uses time-based prompts and strengths-based feedback focused on deep listening and what is memorable and striking in the writing. We do not critique. We support you and your craft in this all-genre workshop.

Workshop Facilitator:
Barbara Krasner has been a certified AWA workshop facilitator since 2013. Her literary work has appeared in more than sixty literary journals. Her love of ekphrastic writing has helped through a period of chronic illness and has resulted in many literary works, including poetry published or forthcoming in The Ekphrastic Review, MacQueen's Quinterly, Main Street Rag, Last Stanza Poetry Journal, The Jewish Writing Project, and elsewhere. Her first ekphrastic poetry collection, The Night Watch, is forthcoming from Kelsay Books. The poems in the collection respond to art personally encountered in Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, and New York City. Barbara lives and teaches in New Jersey.
Comments:
“Barbara Krasner inspires prolific and motivated writing. The writing that comes out of her workshops is simply astounding, as is the camaraderie and sense of community connection. She encourages strength-based feedback, and helps writers nourish each other with valuable insight that does the most powerful thing possible-- it makes you want to write more. Her workshops are inspiring, and one of the most amazing tools I've found in the past decade of striving to develop a robust writing practice. She welcomes people at all stages of writing development and truly encourages unique voices.”—Lindsey-Loon Ricker, California
“Over the past few years, I have taken several different workshops with Barbara Krasner – both individual topics and series. Her prompts are wonderful and clear. Often, I find myself pleased and surprised to see where a topic takes me. She creates a safe and welcoming space. Thanks to Barbara’s workshops, I have become a better writer, both because of her prompts and by hearing the work of fellow writers.”—Helen Goldsmith, California
“I keep coming back—week after week, year after year—because Barbara brings together thoughtful, engaging people, and her prompts always lead us to unexpected and curious places in our writing.”—Vanessa Mishkit, Israel
“Barbara is an excellent facilitator! As a novice writer I was hesitant that her workshops would work for me, but I needn’t have worried. Each session is a safe space, and she creates a helpful and supportive community.”—Diane Jacobs, Florida
“Barbara has been my inspiration and guide to express my thoughts, my research, my discoveries, my emotions, and my memories on paper so that I can share my family treasures with others. Barbara's thought-provoking writing class has transformed my genealogical journey from gathering facts or pieces of a puzzle to connecting those pieces into a narrative allowing me to explore my ancestors on a deeper level. Her style is respectful and creates an environment where participants learn from each other.”—Lori Barnett, Kansas
