Honing Your Poetic Voice
Workshop Description
In this workshop, we will explore the idea of the poetic voice. Not only will we analyze and develop the voice of the primary speaker of the poem, but also voices through personae, historical voices, cultural voices, and even voices through the lens of pop culture. We'll read and discuss examples, workshop poems, and put the techniques into practice. We'll also be analyzing techniques gleaned from fiction and plays to incorporate dialogue into poems. Finally, we'll work on a few performance aspects of your poetry -- sonic sensibilities, reading techniques, and "editing by ear." We'll be listening to recordings of poets reading their work and learning what to do (and what not to do) from their delivery.

Comments
“I have been writing poetry for only the past few years and do not feel as experienced as most of the fellow worshop attendees. But I gained more confidence as a result of having completed the exercises and receiving favorable feedback on my best ones. This helped immensely.”
Chad was awesome facilitator. I especially loved that he offered something unique: practice in reading and recording. Furthermore, his prompts were creative and inspiring and went beyond theme. Rather, the prompts were more geared towards "voice" and "tone" as in "write a poem with a tragicomic tone". He always provided us with examples of the same.
I thoroughly enjoyed Chad's workshop. It was a unique aspect of poetry that I hadn't been exposed to before. The group dynamic was wonderful and Chad's facilitation and feedback were both enriching and motivational.
