Letting the Heart Sing: Sonnet Form and Composition
Workshop Description
Examine the Petrarchan and the English sonnets, with a focus on the role of the volta, the structure of the pentameter line, the opportunities and pitfalls of rhyme schemes, and the uses of enjambment, caesura, and internal rhyme. We’ll consider how a time-honored form can remain contemporary by looking at modern “sonnets” that either adhere to or break from the traditional forms. Sessions include generative writing activities and constructive feedback, with each student having a rough draft of a sonnet completed by the end of session five.

Terry Culleton, an award-winning teacher and author, has published three collections of formally crafted narrative and lyric poems, including A Communion of Saints and Eternal Life, both out through Anaphora Literary Press. His most recent collection, A Tree and Gone, published this spring by Future Cycle Press, consists of fifty-four English sonnets exploring our relationship to the natural and spiritual worlds, and to ourselves as we navigate our busy and increasingly commodified lives. Sonnets from A Tree and Gone have been featured in numerous anthologies and journals, and several have been short-listed in international sonnet contests.
