Written about a year after I underwent spinal surgery and while still dealing with significant nerve damage and muscle loss, this poem was inspired by Frida Kahlo’s stunning and complex self-portraits that center physical and emotional pain. “Frida Kahlo and I Go Swimming at the Community Pool” explores how injury or illness shapes the way we see and move through the world.
