Derek Kannemeyer is a South African-born, London-raised resident of Richmond, Virginia. He writes all kinds of stuff but mostly publishes poetry, much of it in the same 19-line half-form as "A Summoning Song." (It's without fixed meter, but there's a set pattern to its rhymes and refrain words.) This piece about being born is also about how a poem of this kind might come into being, out of a fretwork of sounds flowering into meaning.
