I learned the term “endling” from a UC Berkeley ichthyologist who witnessed the death of the last Megupsilon pupfish, a species he was trying to save. His haunting revelation moved me to write, to wade through irrevocable loss and violence, through complicated histories and precarious relationships that mark our slow-burning, fragile planet. Poetry can serve as both testimony and plea, and perhaps—inspire action.
