It was the 2020 International Holocaust Remembrance Day that inspired this poem as there was no such Memorial Day for the Namibian people, who were the subjects of German colonialism’s experiments used into World War II. I continued my research of prominent Holocaust poems and historical resources to forge this poem together. I wanted to see a poem remember the loss of Namibian people. The villanelle form found the poem with its eerie echoing nature.
