Heather-Dobbins-REVISED.jpg

Heather Dobbins is a native of Memphis, Tennessee. She is the author of two poetry collections, In the Low Houses (2014) and River Mouth (2017), both from Kelsay Press. For twenty years, she has worked as an educator (Kindergarten through college) in Oakland, California; Memphis, Tennessee; and currently, Fort Smith, Arkansas. This poem is from her third manuscript, which is comprised of historical persona poems during the great flood of 1937. It is a blend of research and fiction from those whose lives were defined by the Mississippi River. So many have been calling our times "unprecedented," but when we look at history, we find so many resiliency narratives.
