Peter Vertacnik’s poems and translations have appeared in The Hopkins Review, Poet Lore, Literary Matters, and Water~Stone Review, among others. A former high school teacher, he is currently an MFA student at The University of Florida. “Daybreak on Lake Huron” represents an attempt at writing a love poem that speaks quietly about both pain and transcendence. This poem was the winner of the 2019 Texas Association of Creative Writing Teachers Graduate Student Prize in Poetry.
