Maurya Kerr is a writer, educator, and artist living in Oakland. Her poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in Hole In The Head Review, Blue River Review, and Chestnut Review. “Venge” is inspired by the author’s biological paternal great-grandma who killed a white man and then fled Alabama with her family. It is a reminder of the inestimable measures of violence that Black people endured (and continue to endure) while enslaved and after “emancipation.”
